Been awhile since I posted. Just found out a good blogger friend passed away. Disheartening. So, I just thought I post more and more often in his honor.

Why Photography?

Photography let's you capture them and freeze them for eternity, or at least as long as your negatives last. I've always been fascinated by the ability to do this through a complex mixture of chemicals and mechanical boxes that focus the light, the light, and let you freeze it like a fly in amber. I've always been fascinated by the decisive moment. I shoot with a variety of cameras, the magic box, and I like to shoot Kodak Tri-X, that staple of photojournalists, of which I once were. But film, digital, 35mm, full-frame, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, iPhone 11 Pro. None of that matters. It is the decisive moment that matters. Look at the movement. The emotions. The lines. Individuals, captured, in a slice of life. A moment that meant so very much to each of them, together. Never to be replicated or exp...

GAS. Gear Acquisition Syndrome

We've all had it. That perpetual search for just the right camera. Coming from a long film background, I finally plunged into digital about six years ago by purchasing a Nikon Df. Beautiful camera, beautiful files. Eventually acquired six lenses, four primes and two zooms. Took it on vacation to Scandinavia, and realized, "here's why I never carry this, it's too heavy!" Used my phone. So, I sold it off and bought into an Olympus kit. Two bodies and about eight lenses. Beautiful cameras and lenses, really enjoyed them. Took a lot of photos. But I noticed my iPhone 11 Pro was taking better pictures, most of the time.... So, the night before I left for a cruise around the Caribbean, I packed them all up and shipped them all off to a buyer, and just took my phone along. Got a lot of great shots and only carried one thing. Afterwards, rapidly went through a Nikon Z7, a couple of Sonys, and then a Nikon Z50. All good cameras, but all...heavy and complicated and no fun ...

Okay, a new blog, what next?

Are blogs still a thing? I've had several blogs over the past decade or more, covering things like Apple products, the county I lived in, poems and prayers and promises, technological haiku, virtual reality, and sailing. Among other subjects. Eventually, I blew them all away. This, of course, deleted several hundred hours of thought and writing. Why did I delete them all? It started to seem pointless, despite a couple of my blogs having followers who commented and sort of built a "community." The blogs seemed to me to lose any sort of relevance. Lighting a single candle, and all that. So I chose to curse the darkness. But recently I've come across a couple of blogs ("are blogs even still a thing, or is everyone just on Facebook, or, even worse, twitter?") that seem to keep the flame alive. Good daily reads. Relevant observations and information. Dare I say it, Journalism in its essential form. So I'm back. Here's a cute cat photo.
